Gary Johnson - Cross Country, Basketball, Track & Field - Graduated 1974 East
Growing up the youngest of four, Gary needed to work hard to keep up with his brothers. That determination and focus served Gary well as a budding high school athlete.
Gary joined the Cross Country team his freshman year under Ed Hendrickson at Edina High School and never looked back earning 8 total varsity letters across three sports, Cross Country, Basketball and Track. In Cross Country, Gary was named to the All-District team 3 times, All-Region twice and All-State once. Gary was the #1 Edina runner for three consecutive years including 1971 & 1973 when Edina went undefeated in Lake Conference competition. Additionally Gary held the school record for the 3-mile race for 32 years. In Track, Gary won the Lake Conference 2-Mile race twice. All told, Gary was a member of 4 Lake Conference Championship teams, 3 District Championship teams, 4 Region Championship Teams and 1 State Championship team. Gary was also honored as an Edina Sun Current Athlete of the Century in 2000.
Gary continued running intramural Cross Country and Track at the University of Minnesota where he Placed for Ed’s Old Friends Championship teams 3 consecutive years.
In 1990, Gary founded the Ed Hendrickson/Edina Alumni Cross Country Run as a way to reconnect with old teammates and honor their legendary coach. Gary received the “2025 Mayor’s Senior Commendation” award for 35 outstanding years of volunteer work with the Ed Hendrickson/Edina Alumni CC Races.
Gary had a long career in finance but he and his wife Becky are now retired, spending more time at their family cabin and working seasonally at Three Rivers Park District.
Steve Ramler - Football, Hockey, Baseball - Graduated 1977 East
Steve Ramler was one of the most accomplished athletes in the history of Edina East High School. A standout multi-sport competitor, he excelled in football, baseball, and hockey while demonstrating exceptional dedication and work ethic throughout his high school career.
Ramler made history as the first sophomore to earn a spot on the varsity football team at
Edina East. His outstanding performances quickly made him a local sports star, and a group of enthusiastic supporters known as the “Ramler Raiders” regularly cheered him on.
He continued competing at the varsity level in all three sports during his sophomore, junior, and senior years.
In football, Ramler earned All-American, All-State, and All-Conference honors. In baseball,
he was selected for the All-State and All-Conference, establishing himself as one of Minnesota's premier athletes. His leadership qualities were equally evident, as teammates
selected him as captain of both the football and baseball teams. By graduation, he had earned an impressive nine varsity letters.
Following high school,
Ramler attended Oral Roberts University, where he continued his baseball career as a catcher. While there, Ramler was part of the ORU college world series team of 1978. After college, he played professionally in the Montreal Expos organization.
Beyond athletics, Ramler built a family-centered life. He resides in Broken Arrow and is the proud father of two children, Michele and Ryan, and grandfather to three grandchildren: Leo, Lucia, and JD.
Cam McCambridge - Football, Hockey - Graduated 1999
Cam’s appreciation for athletics and love of the games was fostered by his parents from a young age, encouraging him to try everything.
By the time Cam reached Edina High School he was an accomplished, Varsity-ready athlete, immediately joining both the football and hockey varsity teams. Over his 3 years, he was a 3-year starter for Hockey, a Senior Captain, a 2x All-Lake Conference honoree and a member of the 1997 State Championship team. In Football he was also a 3-year starter, earning All-Lake Conference and All-State honors twice, and as a Senior Captain helped the team win the 1998 Lake Conference Championship.
Cam’s football skills carried him to St John’s University where he played under legendary coach, John Gagliardi for four years. As a starting linebacker, Cam helped SJU to the National Championship game twice, finishing 2nd in 2001 and winning the title game in 2003. Cam still holds five individual Defensive records for St. Johns and remains in the top 10 for another 10 categories.
Following graduation Cam returned to the Twin Cities and embarked on a career at Edina Realty where he has worked for over 20 years. Cam, his wife Michelle and their 3 children live in St. Louis Park where Cam is an active youth hockey and football coach.
Megan Braun Hawker - Swimming - Graduated 2007
Megan didn’t gradually gain dominance in swimming, she burst onto the Edina High School Girls swim team her sophomore year and established a new level of excellence. In her three years, Megan was a 10x individual State Champion, 4x State Record Holder, 12x All-American and Minnesota Swimmer of the Year in 2004, plus helped the team win three Section titles, 2 State Championships and a National Championship in 2004 for the 200 Free Relay.
She won a swim scholarship to The University of Minnesota where she continued her reign, earning 4 Varsity Letters and amassing a long list of accolades including being named a 5x All-American, 3x Academic All-American, 4x Academic All-Big Ten, and 2x First Team All Big-Ten. She is also a 2x Big Ten record holder and 4x University of Minnesota record holder and was awarded the 2010 Big Ten Sportsmanship Award. Also during this time, Megan was a 3-time qualifier for the 2008 Olympic Women’s Swim Team.
Following graduation, Megan started coaching the Chaska Chanhassen Boys & Girls Swim teams earning Section 2AA Coach of the Year and 4 consecutive nominations for Minnesota State High School Coach of the Year.
Megan currently teaches Health and Physical Education at Bloomington Jefferson High School. She and her husband David live in Richfield with their 3 young children.
Katie Engelking Hunt - Tennis, Golf - Graduated 2016
Katie’s individual talent, leadership and team sportsmanship earned her 9 Edina High School Varsity letters (5 in Tennis and 4 in Golf). In Tennis, Katie helped the team win 5 State Tournament Team Championships, was a 2-time All-State honoree, 5-time All-Conference honoree and a Senior Captain. In Golf, she was named to 6 individual All-State and All-Conference teams, helped the team win 3 State Tournament Championships and was a Team
Captain along with her best friend, Hannah Hankinson. She was also a member of the Homecoming Court.
Katie continued playing golf at Bethel University, earning four Varsity letters.
She was a 2-time Captain and as, a Senior was named to the MIAC All-
Conference, and All-Conference Sportsmanship teams in 2019. She remains one of Bethel’s Top Ten Individual Career Scoring Leaders.
Following Hurricane Ian, Katie began helping Florida residents navigate day- to-day challenges, home restorations and rebuilds which led to work in project management, interior design and life management. She and her husband Henry Hunt live in the Twin Cities where they continue to enjoy their shared love of golf.
Hannah Hankinson Hardwick - Tennis, Golf - Graduated 2016
Hannah is the latest in a long line of exceptional athletes in the Hankinson
family. Hannah’s hard work and dedication plus individual talent, leadership and team sportsmanship earned her 11 Varsity letters (6 in Golf and 5 in Tennis). In Tennis, Hannah helped win 5 State Tournament Team
Championships, was a 2-time All-Conference honoree and Senior Captain. In Golf, she was named to 10 individual All-State and All-Conference teams, helped the team win 3 State Tournament Championships by earning in 2nd
place honors twice and was a 2-time Team Captain. Hannah was the 2016
Athena Award winner from Edina High School, was a member of Concert Choir, and was awarded the Triple A Award for excellence and achievement in Academics, Athletics and Arts.
Hannah continued playing golf at Augustana College where she was named the NSIC Conference Freshman of the Year, Conference Golfer of the Year wice, 5-time individual tournament medalist and was an All-Conference
Academic and a three-time All-Conference player. Hannah studied Nursing while at Augustana,
graduating Summa Cum Laude and was also named to the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society for Nursing.
Hannah is now an Operating Room Nurse in San Francisco where she lives with her husband, Jack. Hannah continues to play golf and tennis when not exploring California and traveling to visit friends and family.
Traci Bergo - Swim & Dive Coach
Traci was a 4 year varsity swimmer at Albert Lea High School where, as a ninth grader, Traci broke seven school records during the first five meets of her high school career. As a sophomore she was the first girls’ swimming state qualifier ever from Albert Lea High School. Traci also lettered in basketball and softball. After graduating from ALHS, Traci attended the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire where she was a four-time NAIA All-American and helped UWEC win the NAIA National Championship twice. In 1992, she was inducted into the University’s Hall of Fame.
From 1992-1994 and 1996-2000, Traci was the Head Coach for Edina High School Girls Swimming and Diving team. She continued as an Assistant to both the Girls and Boys teams for an additional 10 seasons after that. As a Head Coach, Traci’s teams won 6 Conference Championships, 4 Section Championships and 3 State Championships. These teams included 9 Top-Ten finishes at the State Tournament and 15 All-American finishes. Traci was voted
Minnesota High School Coach of the Year in 1999 and 2000 and was named to the Minnesota High School Swim Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2016.
In 2017, Traci and fellow coach, Mellanie Pusateri, started a Unified PE class at EHS, pairing general education students with students with special needs. It quickly became a popular PE class and created real connections and interactions between students of varying abilities.
Traci retired from EHS in 2022. She and her partner Deb enjoy golfing, biking and travelling internationally when not spending time with their 3 grown children scattered around Minnesota.
